At the Web. 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Sony President and CEO, Jack Tretton, announced that the PlayStation Vita will be launching in North America on February 22nd. With franchises like FIFA, Uncharted, Bioshock, and Call of Duty all planned for the console, Sony certainly isn't pulling any punches with the release of the Vita.

My ultimate question is whether mobile gamers want console-quality experiences on the go. While Sony seems to grasp the importance of ubiquitous digital distribution (there will be a variant with AT&T mobile broadband integrated), I am not sure that the market really needs the Vita. The most intriguing element of the console is the new "PlayStation Suite SDK" which will allow game developers to code a single application that can be played on any "PlayStation-certified" device, such as phones, consoles, and tablets.

I guess we'll find out next February whether gamers are willing to fork over $249 ($299 for 3G) to carry yet another gaming gadget with them.

I'm very excited about this handheld. While I'm still not sure we need so much power in a portable, I'm looking forward to having dual analog sticks and a great stable of games. The real question is whether the Sony NGP offers enough to pull me away from my iPhone games.

The Sony NGP (the evolution of the PSP) really has me excited. The combination of power, features, flexible controls, and social integration have me more interested in this console than the upcoming Nintendo 3DS. You can get the full rundown on it courtesy of Joystiq here.
