Disney has released an intriguing toy line that blends actual toys with iOS apps. Unfortunately, they chose the rather unwieldy "AppMATes" name for this innovative experience where capacitive toys are used as the input device to control iOS apps. The video helps illustrate how the Cars app will work, and I think that having unique toys that come with special in-game powers will get kids excited. However, I'm not sure how many parents will want to sacrifice their iPads to the inevitable carnage that will be wrought on the screen.

The toys will be available on October 1st, and it will be interesting to see how this new venture fares this holiday season.

I'm ashamed to admit that I never played ICO or Shadow of the Colossus when they originally came out for the PS2. When Sony announced that they'd be releasing an HD-remastered collection for the PS3 featuring these two legendary titles, I was excited  for the opportunity to finally dive into these games. This is definitely the right time to get familiar with Team Ico's earlier work before their third project, The Last Guardian, comes out next year. After watching this launch trailer, I'm even more excited to make the time to play these masterpieces, and will happily pay the $39.99 for the title.

I am a huge fan of Lego, as evidenced by my other blog, Brickd, which focuses on Lego design. I've long lusted after the intricate and amazing "Modular Houses" line, which boasts an amount of compexity and detail not found in other sets. However, I've never taken the plunge into these more advanced builds because they are fairly large and I don't have the space.

That is why I was delighted to read the announcement that Lego will be introducing a "Mini Modulars" set this January for $79.99. This new set will be exclusively available to members of Lego's VIP program, and features microscale recreations of the larger structures. You can hear more about it in the video below.

Recently my friend Kunal and I were talking about augmented reality apps, and I mentioned the potential awesomeness that would be a Mac app that used facial recognition and tracking to put the iconic "Laughing Man" logo from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex onto someone's face via the built-in iSight.

Sure enough, in typical Kunal coding fashion and as a fan of the show, he went out and actually made the app. You can read more about the project here. The app is still under development, and hopefully soon enough you'll all be able to have your own Ghost in the Shell moment.

Eric Chahi's Another World is a game I have many fond memories of playing with my brother on my family's Mac. I was 7 when this game came out (it was called "Out of This World" in the US), and I remember being awestruck by the visuals and the compelling story. It was the first time I realized the narrative power of gaming, and it remains one of my all-time favorite games.

I can recommend without hesitation that you go download this action/adventure masterpiece for your iOS device. The graphics have been updated for this special "20th Anniversary" edition, and features a new touch-optimized control scheme. The game costs $5, and is worth every penny. You can download it here.

This November will mark the 10-year anniversary of the debut of the legendary Halo: Combat Evolved. Part of the celebration of the game that put the Xbox on the map will be the release of the new "Anniversary" version for the Xbox 360 that features updated visuals.

In addition, Diamond Select Toys, the maker of the excellent Minimates line of highly detailed 2-inch toys, will be releasing a new series of figures in their Halo line. Series 4 will feature Master Chief, Cortana, Captain Keyes, and the Prophet of Truth. The new line will debut this winter, but you can pre-order the box set here.

Words cannot express how excited I am for this game. I've thoroughly enjoyed all of the Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton games on my DS, and the combination of these two legendary characters and gameplay styles into a single title is reason enough to purchase a Nintendo 3DS. The game will be landing in Japan in 2012, but unfortunately no US release has been announced.

Logitech has announced their latest entrant in their "Harmony" line of universal remotes. I'm a big fan of the series, since they allow me to program macros for my fairly complex home theater setup that makes it easy for any novice to operate.

By making an iOS universal remote application, I can now reduce my coffee table clutter even more while also giving me a more pleasant and useful interface for dealing with my devices. The program guide element is also intriguing, and I'm curious whether they will offer any social TV features, similar to IntoNow, Miso, and TunerFish.

The Harmony Link will retail for $100 when it hits retail this October, and you can preorder one here.
