New Version of Yahoo! Media Player Wordpress Plugin (v0.4) Available! Includes Bug Fix

yahoo! media player

If you just upgraded to Safari 3.1, you may have noticed that the Yahoo! Media Player is crashing the browser. This is due to a change in the latest version of Safari, and is being addressed and should be fixed ASAP (EDIT: this problem was fixed and pushed to the stable build as Wednesday afternoon, 3/19).

In the meantime, if you try to deactivate the current plugin (v0.3), you may encounter a problem. This is a non-fatal error, and your admin panel should return to normal through just hitting the “back” button on your browser. However, I have found and corrected the bug, so please download and install the new version.

  1. This looks like a nice plugin. you have done a great job describing how to install. and then what? please provide details on how to use once installed. Thanks!

  2. hello, here is some additional information on the Yahoo! Media Player in general. It automatically detects playable media links in your posts. To use, you just put a link to any compatible media file (mp3, etc.) in your post. Then, the player will recognize that link, render the play button next to the link, and include it in the player’s playlist. more information can be found at: http://mediaplayer.yahoo.com/.

i hope that provides some clarity; i’ll modify the install instructions to include that as well.

  3. Hi,

I’m just getting the hang of Word Press and downloaded this widget tonight. Uploaded it, activated it, no problem. But, when I went to Design > Widgets, it didn’t appear anywhere. I was hoping to use it to play music clips I like, etc., but I’m stumped.

    What am I missing?

  4. hi lary,

there is a difference between “widgets” and “plugins” in wordpress. widgets are a subset of the features that can be provided by a plugin to allow a site owner to have content in the sidebar (for example my tag widget, twitter widget, etc). plugins allow you to enable functionality on your site without having to modify code.

my plugin for the yahoo! media player falls into the latter category. when enabled through the “plugins” tab in your administration panel it will automatically go to work when it senses any link to an mp3 (or most music types) referenced on your page. for an example visit my “music” category. you will see the player in the bottom-left of the screen. it also puts the play buttons by each mp3 link to create a better experience than the typical quicktime bar you get when clicking through to the actual file.

also, make sure you have the latest version of my plugin installed, which adds a variety of functionality. you can find it from the “downloads” section. please let me know if you run into any other questions.
